Bloomington, Indiana Herald-Times Treats Gun Owners like Registered Sex Offenders!!!

WTF! Bring up a google map of indexed gun owners! It's only a matter of time until that happens. 1 more reason to not register.

Bloomington, Indiana Herald-Times Treats Law-Abiding Gun Owners like Registered Sex Offenders!

Tuesday, December 01, 2009

On November 30, 2009, the Bloomington Herald-Times made the following announcement:

“This week, HeraldTimesOnline.com will launch its new gun permit database. You’ll be able to search gun permit records by county, city or town and street."

The Herald-Times has begun receiving calls and emails, and their response is a defiant defense of their online gun permit database.

Anyone who visits the newspaper website will be able to search the number of permits on a given street or neighborhood. Although at this point the names and house numbers are not listed, the newspaper’s website treats law-abiding Indiana gun owners like sex offenders on a searchable database.

It is NRA's firm belief that there is no public good served by the publishing or cataloguing private citizens’ gun ownership information, and that more harm is done by such an action. Law-abiding Hoosiers should not be subjected to the same treatment as sex offenders, and if the newspaper won’t listen to their constituents and customers, then NRA Members and Indiana gun owners should send a financial message by cancelling their subscriptions to the Bloomington Herald-Times.

Please contact the Bloomington Herald-Times to respectfully voice your displeasure at the irresponsible action the newspaper has made.

ah yes, the harmless little yellow form that was never going to be used to identify or track you. it was only going to be used to see if you were criminal or had mental issues, you see, and then they were going to throw it away.

Just another bankrupt, nothing-to-lose newspaper struggling for relevance before it dies an ignoble death. I'd think they'd be exposing themselves to lawsuits for doing this, when the first burglar says "yeah, I cased this street then hit it because I knew there were guns here".

Teach a lesson to the journalism majors at IU by putting this rag out of business. I bet it has one foot in the grave already.

That's what I was thinking, way to let criminals looking to acquire guns an easy way to figure out exactly which houses to look for guns at.

And for those crooks not looking for guns but easy marks, it gives them a good way to know which houses are unarmed...

Sprinkle in a little Google street view for casing purposes and the would be criminal will have quite a bit of intel from the net prior to burglarizing victims.

I may be wrong, but I do not think that this is based upon 4473 data, as it is not a permit, and not subject to public records searches (yet!).

I think this would be CCW permits as allocated by local LEOs, most likely Sherrif.

Either way, I can clearly see where this is headed, and I don't like it.

Be sure to post your "Warning:These premises insured by Smith & Wesson" notice.

Proper retaliation: post a map of the entire newspaper staffs' addresses, with notification to criminals that anti-gun, leftist loonies, presumably helpless against home invasions, live there.

We could call it "First Amendment Permit Holders Map."

Re: Bloomington, Indiana Herald-Times Treats Gun Owners like Registered Sex Offenders

A year or two ago a Virgina newspaper, The Roanoke Times, posted an online link to all of the Concealed Carry Permit (CCW) holders in the state. Needless to say this caused a large outcry since listing the names and cities of people with concealed carry permits basically tells criminals what homes to break into when looking for guns. It also told criminals and abusive exes where they can find witnesses and spouses that have moved away.
Of course the paper cried that it was in the public interest to publish this info.
A local group began putting out information on the editor and author of the column listing the info. Their info came from the public records. Their addresses, tax info, property info and other information was made readily available to the public.
Suprise!!! All of a sudden the newspaper decided to disable the link to the concealed carry permit info.
A local radio station was doing a story on the Roanoke Times CCW link. The on air personalities thought that nothing was wrong with the info the paper listed online. A studio guest representing gun owners began to list public information about the DJ's on air. Their home addresses, property values, tax info and other public info was disclosed. Suddenly the on air personalities decided that people do have a right to privacy and changed their mind.
